Electric bicycles – hook on to the trend! Presented by Johan Diepens, director Concordis Groep and Mobycon
We see the electric bicycle as an opportunity to reach new cyclists and give current cyclists new reasons to take the (electric) bicycle rather then the car or public transport. Research by TNO (a research company in the Netherlands) has shown that the average distance for commuters can increase to 9,8 km (compared to 6,3 km with the normal bicycle). And that this does not have to mean less health. Because an other research shows that ‘normal’ bicycles have a pollute factor 0, electric bicycles a factor 1 and cars a factor of 63 to 96.
Authorities can react to these developments in the market very differently. They can ignore the trend and think that an electric bicycle is ‘just’ a bicycle that does not need extra attention. However, if they see the challenge they can facilitate, stimulate or even hurry up developments.
In the discussion we will describe the facts, figures and trends on the market and the chances we see. And challenge the participants with examples from precursors that hook on to the trend.
Prestige cycling in Zwolle (NL), increasing cycling in a top level cycle-city! Presented by Angela van der Kloof, senior advisor Mobycon
The historical city Zwolle is the provincial capital of Overijssel. It has about 115.000 inhabitants, 65.000 jobs and 450.000 movements each day, for 46% by bicycle. From 1975 onwards the city actively stimulates cycling. It has a lot of cycling facilities: an almost finished cycle network, consisting of many cycle lanes, ‘bicycle streets’ and guarded and unguarded bicycle parking. Zwolle is a top level cycle-city!
What do you do when you’ve reached the top level of a game? Do you stop playing? No, you play again and aim for the prestige level! Playing this advanced game is more difficult. It is no longer enough to work on even more infrastructure for cyclists. It is time to go out there and raise the number of trips per cyclist. In 2009 Zwolle started the project ‘Het Nieuwe Fietsen’ (The New Cycling), together with the consultancy agency Mobycon. The aim was to explore new, non-infrastructural, ways to raise the level of cycling.
In the roundtable session we will discuss the three pillars of the project: link with other fields of policy, cooperation with partners in the city and inspiration from abroad.
And we will have a look at the proposed pilot projects as a result.
